Edison Institute
The Edison Institute for Food & Environmental Security—is a project of The Carbon Underground and California State University’s Center for Regenerative Agriculture & Resilient Systems (CRARS). The institute is located in California’s Central Valley, the nation’s most important region for food production. Our goal is to develop solutions that improve conditions in the region where close to 50% of US food is grown, in ways that can be replicated across the country and beyond.
Mission
The Edison Institute for Food & Environmental Security is a farm-based R&D and education center dedicated to reimagining agriculture in an era of climate change.
Our vision is to live at the intersection of agriculture and climate change and conduct research to help farmers achieve greater economic success, community health, and food and water security while mitigating the negative impact of conventional agriculture.
The Edison Institute will:
Fill a critical gap in our understanding of the effect of climate change on soil health and agriculture; and develop innovative, science-based solutions that enhance food and water security.
Identify the changes and opportunities that will support stronger and more profitable food and fiber supply chains by regenerating our soil, restoring the land’s sequestration of carbon and water, and leveraging healthy systems in Nature.
Research-based initiatives to create positive impact
What Makes The Edison Institute Unique?
Independent Research Center Focused on cross-impacts of agricultural practices and climate change on one another.
Full Management Control on 325 dedicated acres donated to the Institute. This affords full control of breadth & independence of research to maximize in-situ & in-lab learning.
Whole Systems Approach to R&D, Integrating ecological, economic, agricultural, social, and political solutions for enhancing food and water security.
Ability to Commit to Long-Term Research that measures what happens over years, not months or seasons.
